Our Review
Scotts Weed & Feed is one of the most searched lawn care products in America, and for good reason — it solves two problems at once. If your established lawn has dandelions, clover, chickweed, or other broadleaf weeds mixed in with the grass, this product feeds the grass while killing the weeds.
The 28-0-3 formula is nitrogen-heavy, which gives your lawn a strong green-up and growth push. The zero phosphorus is increasingly common in maintenance fertilizers (many states restrict phosphorus application on established lawns due to runoff concerns). The potassium provides stress tolerance.
The herbicide component targets 50+ broadleaf weed species. It works on contact — the granules need to stick to weed leaves, which is why the label says to apply on a dewy morning or after light watering. The weeds curl and die within 1-2 weeks.
CRITICAL WARNING: Do NOT use Weed & Feed on newly seeded lawns. The herbicide will kill your new grass seedlings. Wait at least 4-6 mowings (roughly 8 weeks) after seeding before applying any weed-and-feed product. This is the #1 mistake new lawn owners make.
Also, Weed & Feed only kills broadleaf weeds (dandelions, clover, etc.). It does NOT kill grassy weeds like crabgrass — you need a pre-emergent for that.
We'd recommend this for established lawns that need weed control and feeding in a single application. Not for new lawns. Not for crabgrass. For everything else, it's effective and convenient.
